The ASEAN-Korea Cooperation for Methane Mitigation (AKCMM) Project was officially launched in Langkawi, Malaysia on 31 July 2025, marking the commencement of national implementation activities supported by the ASEAN-Korea Cooperation Fund (AKCF) and implemented by the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI).

The event was officiated by the Deputy Secretary-General (Environmental Sustainability) of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) of Malaysia. Representatives from the Malaysian government, Embassy of the Republic of Korea, the ASEAN Secretariat, GGGI also attended the event. The launch underscored the regional scope of the AKCMM initiative and its alignment with Malaysia’s national methane priorities, including the National Climate Change Policy 2.0 (NCCP 2.0), the NDC Roadmap, and the Malaysia’s net-zero target.

The launch event also served as a platform for dialogue among key stakeholders, highlighting the importance of methane mitigation in priority sectors such as waste and palm oil, fostering dialogue on institutional roles, policy coherence, and capacity-building needs. The discussions explored opportunities for collaboration, improved data systems, and methane-related investments.

On 1 August 2025, the first Methane Reduction Committee (MRC) meeting was convened, confirming the National Steering Committee on Climate Change (NSCCC) as the Malaysia’s official MRC under the AKCMM framework, with MyGhG designated as its secretariat.

The meeting endorsed the national AKCMM work plan and timeline (April 2025–December 2027) and validated Malaysia’s methane reduction priorities. The waste sector was identified as immediate focus due to its high emissions potential and institutional readiness, with the palm oil sector identified as secondary priority for targeted mitigation measures.
